I'd like to be able to see the current network outgoing traffic on a linux box; are there any tools available which allow me to do this?

it depends on which distro you're using, if any. most modern distros will have a plethora of network monitoring tools available in your standard gnome or kde menu. look into the progs included with your distro and read up on the documentation.
