How easy is (ubuntu) linux to use for the average person just wanting an alternative operating system?

I'm looking at getting a desktop system and like the idea (and cost) of having a linux operating system. I'm not wanting to program or do anything technical just do what I'd normally do in windows. i.e. surf internet, documents, spreadsheets etc. Is ubuntu the best version for me to use?

Thanks

Ubuntu is pretty easy. Doing the basics you listed are all included in the OS. While it is fairly easy it is not like windows. Some things are similar. One of the most difficult things to get used to is the way that new programs are installed, by using the package manager. Like others have suggested it would bea good idea to check things out on the Ubuntu site for new users. Whenever you do get stumped there are lots of great people on the Ubuntu forums to help you out. Overall as far as ease of use goes, there is a learning curve just as there was when you were learing windows or whatever OS you are used to using, but once you get over that is very easy to use.
Reply:It worked for me without any real computer knowledge. Another distribution that is similar to Ubuntu and deserves a look is Linux Mint 4.0 (main edition). Get the live CDs and try them before installing onto your hard drive. Note that the live CDs run more slowly than the OS once it is installed onto a hard drive.
Reply:yeah it's pretty easy. Installation is supported by the GUI now for most apps.

However, for more advanced features, it still uses terminal (command line) so to take full advantage of ubuntu you'll need to learn the commands.

But for general usage and nothing fancy, it should be pretty easy.
Reply:Ubuntu is very easy to use for the average person, and should include the software to do what you want (ie. Open Office for documents, Firefox for browsing, etc.) I personally love ubuntu, especially when I have the effects from XGL turned on...
Reply:The power of Linux is it's console like DOS in Windows. But if you don't install anything or learn until deep so just basic usage only, Ubuntu isn't so difficult to use and it support GUI
Reply:Actually I believe that debian stable would be the best for you its easy to install and if thats all you do its all set up for youi to use and is more stable then ubuntu.
