Yes, you can erase the entire disk. Most Linux distros will give you the choice during the install. How it will ask you depends on the distro.

Reply:kill disk and fresh install windows and then linux the extra partition
Reply:just pop in a ubuntu based distro and boot it up. click on the install icon and it will walk you through it. its even easier then windows to install. I use linux mint its like ubuntu on steroids and I love it.
