How do I install Linux Gnome onto a machine with Windows NT?

I've got this computer thats currently has Windows NT on it (worst bit of trash I've seen) and I'm trying to put on Linux Gnome (although any Linux os would be good). What i've been doing is booting off a CD with Linux on it, and it starts installing, but after a few steps it stops and freezes. Help?...

How do I install Linux Gnome onto a machine with Windows NT?
Gnome is a window manager (desktop), KDE is another desktop, and there are many others. Linux can run either - choose your distro, then worry about gnome. Ubuntu is by default installed with Gnome.

THe other post on the alternative distro is a good start for your current problems. www.google.com "your hardware ubuntu" would tell you about specific issues you can expect, and solutions!
Reply:You didn't mention what distro you've been trying, perhaps its Ubuntu..

If it freezes then probably your disc is bad. Download again, check md5sum and burn at a slow speed.

KDE is prettier than Gnome in my opinion.

New version of Ubuntu is coming out in just one day, so i would suggest you wait until 2morrow if you're going to download ubuntu.

EDIT:

@ COLTOR:

Microsoft windows has nothing to do with Live CD. Maybe he has less RAM or some other problem.
Reply:Lots of crappy MS-running computers can't handle the Live CD. Try installing from the alternate CD. This is a text-based installation CD that is usually found on the same website as the Live CD. (at least Ubuntu has one) It's a little harder to use, but it's still pretty easy.
