I want a linux based browser to use in windows. I figure it will not let me get viruses/ wares when browsing? I tried running linux from within windows but its way to slow, and I don't want to do a dual boot machine. I just want to surf without getting viruses. If anyone knows of anything, I will need something fairly easy to set up as I am not very tech savvy. Thanks!
Is there a linux based browser for windows?
firefox
but in order not to get virus you shouldn't download things you are unsure of a browser is not goning to prevent you from getting a virus
Reply:The two main internet browsers in linux are Firefox and Opera. Both of which are available on windows. I use firefox myself, on both windows and linux.
Reply:This question is funny on two levels.
1st. No such thing as a linux based browser
2nd. Computers using Linux are the most likely out of any OS to be attacked by hackers.
Reply:There is no such thing.
That's like saying you want a Volkswagen based engine for you Hummer.
You can use FireFox, that may help, but you are better off learning how virus's work and protect your self with knowledge.
Reply:There is no such thing as a "Linux-based browser". There are browsers that run under Linux.
I use Firefox. Much safer than IE, but the fact is, you will still be vulnerable.
There are some who say that Firefox is no safer in an architecture sense. I do not believe that, but even if it is true, you are still safer in Firefox if for no other reason than virus writers target IE. It's used by 90% of the web users, so it is a big target.
Opera is also very nice.
Reply:if all you want is to surf safe I would simply run a live cd like knoppix or DSL and surf like that worst case just unplug your HD if you realy think you need extra protection those 2 will run nice and quick on even slow machines. Option 2 I am not sure this will keep you all the way safe or not use one of the online OSs like goowy maybe that will be to your liking. But what ever you do dont join our cult LOL I simply dont have enough snakes and candles to share with everybody LOL. sorry I had to get that out to some of the other idiots that have no idea what linux is all about.
Reply:Yes but unfortunately it will be quite slow.
You can download a Linux emulator Cygwin and install a Linux browser through that. Anything that you download will be safe as long as you never use it in the windows environment. However this will be quite slow, not as slow as embedded but still slow. I would seriously consider using a live CD (like Damn Small Linux) rebooting and browsing the web when you need to.
You can also try to install a firewall but that can only work so well.
