What would be the best one, I would like it to have a GUI, and have emulators for games etc, but I would also like to have it able to be dual booted at the start, so I can choose between windows and the linux.
I would also appreciate if you can link to sites that have the linux OS to d/l, instructions on instalation (if possible) and most importantly how to set it up so I can dual boot and keep the two os's seperate.
What is the best desktop linux to get?
Here is my list, having been running GNU/Linux since 1997:
Beginners and noobs, who want an easy, 'hands free' version, all should get http://pclinuxos.com and if this liveCDrom with 5,000 games and programs fits your needs, you press the 'Install PCLinuxOS' button!
You want to tell it, in the partitioning part, that you want to create a second partition, for PCLinuxOS, and, a third one of about your memory size up to 1Gb, for the memory swap file.
Second choice, for more advanced users, is http://kubuntu.org
Installs of any second OS, with re-partitioning of the hard drive, requires that you FIRST, in Windows, de-frag and clean up the drive!
You will find that you don't have to administer the system, like you do in Windows (about an hour every 20 hours of use, per computer!), with Microsoft having 150,000 Virus Definitions, and the spyware, adware, pop-ups, core vulnerabilities, that plagues Windows!
Linux will be a real relief! Plus, GNU/Linux uses all the same tools as MAC OS X (based upon another Unix, Darwin BSD!) that are maintenance free!
http://lugww.counter.li.org has 700 FREE clubs, so there is probably one in your area!
Free advise and help is ALWAYS there, at the forums for each distro! Linux is what 76% of all Internet servers, including Microsoft.com and hotmail.com (15,000 Linux Servers for EACH!), and Google.com (100,000 servers!) run!
Reply:Firstly it isn't true that you spend all your time administering the system with linux.
Most of the more well known linux disros are pretty good but for someone new to linux I would recomend Suse, you can download it for free at:http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux...
Also if you join these 2 forums there is some excelent advice:
http://www.justlinux.com
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?%26amp;%26amp;CO...
To install just put the Suse CD in the drive and boot from the CD drive, you may need to set the bios to do this,Suse will automatically partition your hard drive and install Grub bootloader so that when you boot your PC there will be the choice of which OS to boot to, It should find %26amp; configure all your hardware with no trouble, if you purchase it there is 90days of installation support. mail me if you want any more help.
This google search should give you a good start with running windows games on linux:

Reply:Linux is overrated.
You spend all your time administering the Linux OS itself.
If you get a problem, you're stuffed. You can spend days wading through pages on pages of outdated manuals and commentary on the internet looking for the solution.
At least a needle in a haystack looks like a needle, and the hay doesn't.
It used to be that you'd expect Windows to crash 4 or 5 times a day, whereas you could leave a professional Unix machine on for weeks. Windows is OK for days at a time now.
Reply:A difficult question to answer as there's so many. Most people will tell you that their favourite is the best but you really should make up your own mind. Have a look at
http://www.distrowatch.com
You'll find information on all the popular versions there along with links to their websites. If you need help with installation etc email me.
Reply:I have 3 different Linux OS, as we know thier underlying kernel is same, the only difference is GUI.
If you want to do less linux hacking stuff and work most of the time using GUI then Ubuntu is best for you as you can install software using thier synaptic program (GUI) for free. Kubuntu is also good and same as Ubuntu but the difference is Ubuntu is GNOME and Kubuntu is KDE.
My personal preference is Fedora Core 4 (or 5) as it is controlled by Red-Hat linux group and they are in this business for more then 13 years. Fedora Core 4 %26amp; 5 contains both GNOME and KDE (for free).
Now you decide which one you want. Although remember that you get a lot of free programs Red-Hat, which also works on Fedora Core, therefore I would recommend you Fedora Core.
