What's the best version of Linux to install on a Dell Inspiron Laptop?

I tried installing Ubuntu but had display problems that made the screen unrecognizable.

My system has duo processors 2 GB ram and like 20 gb of free space that I could turn into 40 if necessary.

What's the best version of Linux to install on a Dell Inspiron Laptop?
The answer is basically depends on what kind of hardware (graphics card, modem, etc) you have not the model of your laptop.

I would recommend you to try using vmware first and see if all hardwares are detected by linux version. This way to don't have to install linux just download and use on top of windows.

Download linux virtual appliances from below link.
Reply:I guess my question would be why would you want to install Linux in the first place???

Windows based programs are much more friendly and compatible.
Reply:I installed Ubuntu without problems on my Inspiron 8500. You might try a slightly older version - 6.10?

If it works as a LiveCD, it should work following installation.

www.distrowatch.org - choose among the top 10 if you can't get Ubuntu to work.

I would try Mephis or Mint (I don't like rpm package management, and I don't know enough about PClinuxOS to recommend it - but it is popular).
