How do I get my regular Windows XP back from Ubuntu Linux?

I didn't download Ubuntu Linux yet. The reason why and want to download it because I saw a lot of Youtube videos of it and it looked cool. That's why I'm gonna get a free download of it. But, I'm worried, what if I want to get back to my old Windows XP? Can I?

If you want to try a Linux Distro without messing with your hard drive you can. All you have to do is go to the website for that particular distro, download it and then make a boot CD of it. You'll then be able to run it from your ROM drive leaving your hard drive completely out of the equation until you decide for sure which distro you want/need. Once you decide which you ARE going to choose you can install it from that bootable CD following the directions that another user has given you here (for a dual boot system) and from the CD itself...as well as the sources I've given you below.

Those two sites will give you a GREAT start on learning all that is Linux.





The Forums that each distro offers on the net are super places to learn from, too.





You'll WANT to find a LUG (Linux Users Group) in your area. You can do this from the www.linux.org site, too.





LUGs are GREAT for getting info about and help with Linux from those in your community who USE different Linux distros! My LUG has helped me TREMENDOUSLY! They even gave me bootable cds of Kubuntu 7.04 (since I'd decided I 'wanted' to use it by researching tech sites and the web) and PCLinuxOS 2007.





I've since found that while the Kubuntu is more robust it's a bit harder to navigate and is a little more of a resource hog than the PCLinuxOS that I have in my ROM at this moment in time while I'm typing this to you.





Once I learn a lot more about each of these distros, I'm going to set up the dual boot system described by that other Answerer with the one I choose. This way I can have the best of both worlds while I complete my total change over to Linux so I can ditch Windoze altogether in the long run.

Reply:be very careful in the installation.


First : you don't have to worry about the windows if you make partition, you will get dual boot!!! so


first of all :


1)try to get PArtitionMagic


2)make a linux (5Go) and swap(1Go) partition with it.


3)put the linux CD and reboot from the CD


4)in the linux installation process you will need to indicate that the root folder is "/" in the linux partition is the one that you made early with PartitionMagic


5)let linux install "grub" on the primary disk sector


6) after the installation finished, restart, grub will give the choise to boot on the old windows or on the new linux

Reply:if you have to ask the answer is no... don't be fooled, ubuntu works well... but if you're familiar with windows (as in have used it for a few years) you'll hate ubuntu and you'll want windows back... if you just have to download Ubuntu, you can run it from the CD and try it before you install it...
