I am interviewing applicants for a Linux Systems Administrator position. Primarily Redhat. Any sample questions to test their skill?

Q: When dealing with a WAN resource that uses TCP/IP and DNS such as a web site, how do you differentiate between a DNS error and a routing error using a windows system that has the default tools and applications installed and an active internet connection?

A: If the client system and site are not behind a ctcp ping filtering firewall, you ping the site via name and via IP address.

1) If both pings fail - It's routing or server hardware

2) If the IP ping succeeds ONLY, it's a DNS failure.

3) If both pings succeed, it's client web browser.

Why would a proxy hinder this trouble shooting process?

I always ask this one of anyone that indicates they are proficient with TCP/IP.
Reply:Q: What command will allow you to see the transmit and receive errors on a network interface?

A: netstat -i - This is good for troubleshooting poor network performance relating to speed/duplex issues (CRC/FCS errors)

Q: What is the purpose of the chkconfig command?

A: To enable or disable system services.
Reply:Why don't you ask your applicants the same question you posed here? It could be interesting to see what kinds of things they come up with, as well as insight to their thought patterns -- almost like a 2 for 1.
