How do I connect to linux with ubuntu and external dial up modem?

I am switching to Linux, I have talked the wife around and provided that she can read word docs (Open office) and connect to the internet she is happy with linux. And there is my problem.

I have a Zoom 3049 external serial modem (bought last week on ebay and working in windows), but I can not figure out how to connect to the internet through ubuntu. The help dos are not that helpful, they just say check that it is compatable (I know it is). Could some one tell me step by step what to do.

Also, ubuntu uses gnome, can I use Kdevelop with it?

How do I connect to linux with ubuntu and external dial up modem?
Could you say how you are running ubuntu? On a live CD or a hard disk install, and which version? Recent versions of it should recognise the modem as device dev/tty0 and install it. Pls let's have a bit more info and see if we can help.

P.S. Meanwhile you could try downloading and running scanmodem tool from http://linmodems.org/ which is incidentally a good site for all kinds of questions relating to modems and linux.
Reply:Other sources for UBUNTU info:
Reply:u could also type minicom at the shell and type atz. If it returns ok, your good. Then use kppp or something to connect to the net.

How can I set up a Music Server for my LAN with Linux?

I want to listen to the same music at the same time with 2 computers in my LAN. One is running Linux, the other one Windows XP. So I thought it would be the best to set up server on the linux pc and setup a stream to the other pc. But I don't know how to do that. What application do you recommend me? Should be easy (fast) to configure. Is this possible without a delay, anyway?

How can I set up a Music Server for my LAN with Linux?
Samba is an excellent server suite and it works on Linux and Windows - at the same time. We use it at work, and I have built in to Ubuntu distro, but I have not configured or done any troubleshooting - mostly because it runs well.

It's a freebee so check out the Samba site
Reply:Samba is great but can be a little tricky to configure. It is so that Linux machines can communicate with windows protocols. I am sure it came with your Linux distro. I have an extra one for you. SSH. Can be a processor hog because of the massive decryption and encryption but is easy. I am almost positive that the ssh daemon is running on your Linux machine at boot. Just get the ssh windows client from the link here

http://www.ssh.com/support/downloads/sec...

please read the indications, it is for non commercial use only!

Just load it up on your windows machine and connect to your Linux machines ssh daemon (do a ps -aux to see if sshd is running at the terminal/command prompt) and drag and drop the files from your Linux machine to your windows machine and vice versa.

Hope that helps

Reply:yes as gordon said use samba.. to let you know i am running suse 10.1 on a p3 450mhz this is my server and it works great and it is easy to setup

While running Linux from disc do I need to download and install firewall and antivirus?

I am new to the Linux community and have just recently started checking out Ubuntu. Do I need to install a seperate firewall and av on the disc to be safe ?

While running Linux from disc do I need to download and install firewall and antivirus?
Well, there have been a great many answers, some good and some bad. I like the answer where someone said "you don't need an antivirus and you might need a firewall", but that's not the whole story, either.

As with any computer running any OS (Operating System), you really need to be careful about what you download or run from the Internet. This is not just limited to executables, either; websites with Flash content or Javascript are also dangerous depending on the nature of the site. So, yes, you don't need an antivirus program in Linux if you're responsible about what you download / run. To the person that said that viruses "don't exist in Linux", you're completely wrong; viruses exist in all OS's, but they are MORE of a problem on Windows-based PCs. If you're looking to use Linux for an extended period of time, then I would either install an AV program or I would be especially careful about what I do on this PC to avoid AV problems.

Really, the firewall is much, MUCH more important than the AV, but the question should be "why" you need a firewall, not if. Ubuntu is good about not starting up with too many unnecessary or vulnerable services running; other Linux OS's like Gentoo start with sshd (Secure Shell service), for instance, that could be vulnerable. So, check and see what services are running and disable any that you don't need. Then, to increase the security on your ports with stateful packet filtering, you would have a couple options.

There are a number of firewall products for Linux, one of which was Firestarter, if I remember right. It has a graphical interface, so it's pleasant to the average user, and should be sufficient for your needs. If you're looking to delve deeper into Linux and learn how powerful command line can be, then you'll want to read up on iptables; I configure our Linux firewalls at work with iptables and it has a great number of options. Since it does have a reasonable learning curve, though, I'd give Firestarter a try.

Really, the only question you should ask yourself when wondering how secure your PC needs to be is "what kind of communication will occur to / from my system, and do I need any of those?". It takes a lot of reading and understanding about an OS to do security the right way... for the average person, a decent graphical firewall and some common sense should suffice, though.
Reply:you really shoud have that before you even come online yes download them
Reply:No.

Firewalling may become an issue if you run the live cd for any extended time, but virii are typically of very little consequence to Linux in general, and less to LiveCD's. [Depending on how you use it, little or no consequence.]

Comment back and post how you plan to use the livecd- short jaunts or long term 24/7 use, etc.
Reply:I would say it is not necessary at all if you are running from a Live CD as the local file systems are mounted read only by default. Moreover, there is a default firewall, iptables, on most Linux systems that comes along. So, both AV and Firewall are unnecessary.
Reply:NOT necessary, unless you make a hard drive partition for DLs.

There is no virus in GNU/Linux, and the Anti-Virus programs in MAC OS, BSD, and Linux are there to protect Microsoft users on a network!

I find virus, download them, look at them, but, delete them, but, I can see where a windoze unit could possibly get it on the network.

I only have one XP Pro box on this network, of 12 Linux and 5 Macs systems. more in the wings... but, it dims the lights to turn on too many...

You should really try out http://pclinuxos.com which is a LiveCD. I consider it superior, but, YMMV.
Reply:My answer is a conditional yes.

Even if the Linux is booted temporarily, a connection to the internet which is open is an invitation to corruption. If you use a Linux browser, you can still pickup viruses and trojans and you can still affect your disk or your local network by exposing it to the internet.

As an analogy, I would ask you if there is ever a time that you will leave your front door of the house wide open and unlocked in a questionable neighborhood? You may say no, except when I am entering and leaving and when I am moving something into the house...then I will prop the door open and leave it while I move in and out. ....OK, but would you walk away from the door and leave it unattended in that case? What if you used the bathroom or were moving into the basement? Ahhh, in that case someone could sneak in and out without your knowledge...and likely would given that the door is open.

Such is the nature of the internet. For me, I opt to keep my doors locked and secured and have someone inspect the security periodically. "Your mileage may vary"

How do I check my computers specs on Linux?

I've recently made the switch from Microsoft Windows to Linux. The distribution I'm using is Fedora 7.

What I would like to know, is how do I check my systems specs? For example, on Windows you right click on My Computer and go Properties. You then get an overview or you can choose to go to the Device Manager.

Basically I'm trying to keep an eye on all my hardware to ensure its running correctly.

Thanks.

How do I check my computers specs on Linux?
Ummmm.....I am not much familiar with Fedora (I use Ubuntu), but there has to be some place in it. Anyway, Linux offers so much versatile help that you can know it from a Linux geek yourself. If you know how to use IRC, join a Fedora channel (must be something like #fedora ) and there you can chat with Fedora geeks and get solutions to your problems!
Reply:"dmesg" should be able to give you hardware configuration.
Reply:Fedora's not my thing, but there should be some terminal entry you can do.. lsmod, perhaps..

I don't know if there is a GUI version on Fedora..

Is it possible to get the Netgear WG511v2 LAN network PCMCIA card working in Linux?

I know what you're probably thinking, ndis wrapper. I tried that but it failed. If anyone knows of an easier way (not linuxant since it isn't free) to get the PCMCIA card working, can they please tell me! Also, if there is no way, can someone please tell me how to do it on ndis wrapper without it getting an error because I don't really understand Linux's Console Language and prefer to stay with GUI.

Is it possible to get the Netgear WG511v2 LAN network PCMCIA card working in Linux?
Well maybe, this card uses the Atheros 5001X+ chipset you can see some of the driver information for these at http://users.linpro.no/janl/hardware/wif...

They say that card MAY work with the Madwifi driver,

http://sourceforge.net/projects/madwifi/

Give it a shot..not all wifi cards are supported in linux (the manfs. just dont get the idea we like linux.. So while you are at it shoot Netgear a note and tell them you want one. The more people asking the more likely we are to get them to support us.

What is the best online place to buy Linux server, and what the best server brand?

I am Looking to buy Linux server online to be shipped to colocation in Atlanta, I need recommendation for the best company to by online.

What is the best online place to buy Linux server, and what the best server brand?
a "linux server" is nothing more than an IBM compatible PC with Linux running as it's operating system.

Linux nowadays has drivers for most common hardware on the market, so as long as you stick with industry standard components (ASUS or INTEL motherboards, 3-com or d-link Ethernet, ATI or Matrox video, Creative labs sound card....you get the idea) You'll be fine. I just suggest you purchase the systems from a store that will pre-load the linux onto the units to your specifications so that if there are any issues, they can be solved before the unit is shipped.

How do you make install packages for linux programs you make?

I know absolutely nothing about linux application development, and am a C++ programmer. What I mean is that I'm not familiar with linux's API nor how to create deployment packages.

Do the packages have to be unique for every flavour of linux?

Once I compile an application, what am I supposed to do next. What if it has a GUI, not using wxWidgets (as well as using wxWidgets)

I've tried googling with not much success.

How do you make install packages for linux programs you make?
Usually the formats for source code that is distro free are either compressed on bzip2 or tar.gz files. You may need filters capable of converting to these type of files in order to get the source code packed. Also you need to make a "configure" and "make" script (one of each) in order to get the software installed on the system in order to run it.

Hope this info gives you some ideas.

What are the best languages to learn for linux?

I was wondering, what are the best languages to learn for linux? obviously C, but what else?

What are the best languages to learn for linux?
If you're talking about linux kernel dev, C and C++. Application level development could be java, c, c++, and the window manager api's like kde or gnome. qt might help. Other than that, mono supports C# on linux and all the web languages/scripts work too.

for linux system admin stuff, python/perl/bash/sh/ksh/tch scripting will help a lot. text editors like vi or emacs will help you in the long run.

Not enough info as your linux of choice will determine the steps to set up wireless. I assume you just want to configure linux to connect to an existing wireless AP? If so this should not be much of a problem.
Reply:Just click on the Network Manager icon and select the SSID, or Manual configuration. Enter your WPA key. Job done! :)

I have a need for a program that listens for connections on a specific port and copies files that are sent to that port. The environment is Linux. I prefer C++. Do you have any class or any other suggestions? I've never written anything like this.

Google it, tons of examples.

I like C++ better too, but Java would be a better choice, unless you are doing gigs of data as fast as possible. Easier to write, maybe 20 lines or less.

What is the most easy to learn: Linux administration or web development?

I am a 48 PC Technician and would like to switch into the Linux or Windows Administration field. But I was wondering if the web development would be also a good alternative? If yes some recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What is the most easy to learn: Linux administration or web development?
Web development is definitely easier, however, this means that there is plenty of competition.

If you can train yourself to become a solid Linux admin, you will have less trouble finding jobs that pay well in the long run.
Reply:Learning the mechanics is easy, but the nuances take a life time to learn.

That applies to both webdev and admin. I'd choose Linux admin if I were good at following the rules and making others follow the rules as well. If I were a creative person, I'd take webdev.

Both offer a good window to enter into serious programming. Try that in your spare time.
Reply:Web development. Easy and fun.
Reply:Linux admin!

Linux is more mature today and corporations are moving to a linux platform more and more......Home Depot is 100% linux at their stores!

Web development is ok, but as Open SOurce solutions come together, this job will be less and less important.
Reply:Web dev is much easier, but more web dev jobs are being outsourced to India.

Thanks, George.

How do I get internet working in Linux?

I think its an issue with drivers considering I can't use internet in windows unless I install the drivers but how would I install the drivers for it in Linux?

Is there a place where I can download them or is there some way of using the terminal to make it work or what?

How do I get internet working in Linux?
Unless your network hardware is very weird/old, you'll have drivers installed when you set up networking at OS install time. Linux has much better support for old and legacy cards than Windows. If your card is truly ancient, you might want to splurge the $6 it will cost to get a modern Ethernet card from 3Com or DLink. If you don't know your gateway and DNS settings, allow them to be obtained from your ISP via DHCP from your cable modem or DSL router. Almost all modern distros have a networking configuration tool. It will be under 'Configuration' or 'Preferences' or something similar from the main menu. Select the interface you want to configure (usually eth0) and tell it to get configuration data from DHCP. There might be a setting to activate the interface on boot; make sure it is selected. If your interface won't start up on boot, try typing 'ifup eth0' at the command line. To see what interfaces you have and what their settings are, try typing 'ifconfig' from a terminal window. To see what your machine thinks the gateway is, type 'route -n' from a terminal. The line you see with the Flags field set to UG is the next hop route i.e. your modem or DSL router.

If you're going via a firewall or internal router which is not acting as a DHCP server, you will need to set up your connection as a static IP address (you will also need to do this if you want to run your machine as an intranet server). For this you will need to know the address of the gateway (usually something like 192.168.1.1), the netmask (usually 255.255.255.0) and some DNS settings which you will need to obtain from your ISP. You would use the same graphical connection tool as for setting the system to get info via DHCP, except you choose 'static' for the interface you want and then enter the required settings.

How do I change the color quality on Feather Linux?

It is a Dell Dimension 2100 running Feather Linux. How can I get the display to 32 bit color? Do I need to download drivers? If so, where can I find Linux Drivers?

How do I change the color quality on Feather Linux?
Go to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and open it with any text editor available. Look for DefaultColorDepth and put it 32. Save and restart KDE.

Linux drivers can be found at this link:

http://www.linux-drivers.org/display.htm...

(if not already included in the distributions packages).
Reply:Computer screens are commonly 800 or more pixels wide. The lowest screen display size is 640 x 480 pixels. Most GC computers are set to 1024 X 768. In 2002 the most common screen width earth-wide was about 800 pixels. It appears that 1024 pixels has since edged out 800.. On a PC, right-click on screen background and pick properties to see how many pixels on your screen.

I want to start running Linux Opp System. What computer is best?

I want to start using Linux Opp System. I was told that Linux is a good opp system to use if one is interested in learning how to do some computer programming. Can a normal PC do the trick? What about an Apple, it is about the same as a PC or do Apple only run their own opp system?

I have been using PC all my life so I know nothing about Apple or Linux. Please help.

I want to start running Linux Opp System. What computer is best?
Linux runs on many different processors, including intel 386 and newer(PC and latest Mac ), motorola 680x0 series, Powerpc(macs) Sparc 4s,4m,and 4u (Sun )

Most hardware is supported with the exception of Win-printers and Win modems. Some wireless cards are not support because the hardware makers do not releasing the techical specifications for the chipset.

Yes a normal PC can do the trick. You can get a used one that is a couple of years old, and more likely to be fully supported.

Check out the links for more info.
Reply:I don't know much about Apple, but you can install Linux on any normal PC.

Before that Unix is for special hardware, but someone created Linux (90% same as Unix) to work on PC, and he still let us use his Linux for free on all over the world. This Linux OS is much better than Windows.
Reply:You can run Linux on virtually any computer. Very easy install on Apple, haven't tried on a pc; but regardless you shouldn't have too many problems.

I'm an Apple person %26amp; for giggles I installed 4 operating systems on my old G4/400MHz (OS 9, OS X, Windoze XP Pro %26amp; Linux). Since you are a pc person I'd stick with what you know, maybe install another internal hard drive and install Linux on that. I don't see any need to buy another machine.

p.s. Col has no idea what he's talking about - Linux runs great %26amp; Easy on a Mac. The main point is you have a pc that will do what you need with nothing else required.
Reply:You can use just about any computer with linux. There are a number of distributions that will run on everything from an iPod to a Mainframe!

If you have a PC running windows, you can even run linux from Windows or Boot from a CD and never upset your Windows software.

There are tons of websites to get you started, so do a search for linux beginner and you will be on your way.

good luck!
Reply:No, you cannot use an Apple computer to do Linux. To start linux just install it on your blank HDD and go from there. Or, if you want to run two OS at the same time, which I do too, you can partition your HDD, and install the Linux OS on the blank partition. Choose the partition with the OS you want to run with to run first, then when you start your computer, you should be able to run the OS.

PC and Linux can be run on the same machine, just not at the same time. Apple is a different breed of its own. (and it su*ks!)
Reply:There are many versions and distributions of Linux. I have used Fedora Core, Mandrake , suse... this distributions must be installed on your Pc , and some distribution which runs from CD, Live CD like Debian, Damn Small Linux.

To run linux you need at lest 600 Mhz Intel or AMD processor, 4 Gb free space, 8 mb video, 256 mb RAM... at leat... :d

I you have a top computer is better :)

What can be done to make Linux more competitive with Microsoft?

Microsoft has 95% of the desktop market, but many versions of Linux are capable and competitive operating systems. Yet, Linux hasn't caught on with most desktop users. So, with that in mind, why hasn't Linux caught on, and what can be done to help make Linux more widely accepted among ordinary desktop users?

Postfix is a fast, easy to configure, linux mail server that's available for most distributions. Redhat wrote a pretty good howto (in sources below).

The important directive for directing all non-local mail out of your internal server to your dedicated server is relayhost. The line would look like

relayhost = drs:26

(just replace drs with name or ip of your dedicated root server).

Setting up a web server (or any other server for that matter) is way too complex for this forum. Try the Apache web site (below) for installing and configuring Apache.
Reply:I'd think you'd need a static IP address first... or look into dyndns.

Apache Web server

PHP for Apache (or whatever scripting language you want)

MySQL?

You'll need to use Synaptic Package Manager to install these packages. (System-%26gt;Administration-%26gt;...)

Do a google search on how to get started with Apache, to see how to configure the server and where to put your files.

Btw, I have an account with titaninternet, which costs me £120 a year. Tech support is excellent and their statistical tool is pretty cool.

Reply:ok.......this is a complex issue, for starters the security of linux is not automatic......the security of the os im more baecause most ppl who use it know what they are doing, second when you say that you have a server ready you mean you have instaled 60 gb of redundant disk space on a pc, instaled linux, then instaled a second NIC, and now you wanna configure linux? are you gonna use this machine as your mailserver as well? i recomend that you build a no network network first then experament.

Where can I find a Linux compatible driver for a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter?

I recently set up my XP machine on a Linksys wireless router and decided to try and add my older Linux machine to the network as well. The machine does not have wireless, so I bought a Linksys Wireless-G PCI card today and installed it, but the drivers included with it are only for XP and Vista. Are there any third party drivers out there I can use?

Where can I find a Linux compatible driver for a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter?
It depends on the Linux Distro you are using, but it may work out-of-the-box, no third party drivers needed. Try popping it in and see if it works. If that's the case, you're golden.

If not, then you can install NDISWrapper for your Linux distribution. It's fairly common so you should be able to find it for your distro. Once you install NDISWrapper, you can use the Windows driver that came with your Linksys card to make it work.
Reply:Try linksys website, they have all the supported drivers there.

How do I install Linux Gnome onto a machine with Windows NT?

I've got this computer thats currently has Windows NT on it (worst bit of trash I've seen) and I'm trying to put on Linux Gnome (although any Linux os would be good). What i've been doing is booting off a CD with Linux on it, and it starts installing, but after a few steps it stops and freezes. Help?...

How do I install Linux Gnome onto a machine with Windows NT?
Gnome is a window manager (desktop), KDE is another desktop, and there are many others. Linux can run either - choose your distro, then worry about gnome. Ubuntu is by default installed with Gnome.

THe other post on the alternative distro is a good start for your current problems. www.google.com "your hardware ubuntu" would tell you about specific issues you can expect, and solutions!
Reply:You didn't mention what distro you've been trying, perhaps its Ubuntu..

If it freezes then probably your disc is bad. Download again, check md5sum and burn at a slow speed.

KDE is prettier than Gnome in my opinion.

@ COLTOR:

Microsoft windows has nothing to do with Live CD. Maybe he has less RAM or some other problem.
Reply:Lots of crappy MS-running computers can't handle the Live CD. Try installing from the alternate CD. This is a text-based installation CD that is usually found on the same website as the Live CD. (at least Ubuntu has one) It's a little harder to use, but it's still pretty easy.

What is the Best and most importantly easiest linux distro for an older computer?

I have an old Dell, with 933 mhz processor, 128MB Ram, 20GB hardrive, and a CD burner. What is the best linux distro for this computer? It currently runs Windows 2000 pro. For hoots, I tried running Windows XP on it, but it was too slow. I think the 128MB or ram is what really holds the computer back, but only my parents use it, and theres not much sense in upgrading it at this point. I want to set up a dual boot on it so I can start learning linux with out fear of messing up my current computer. My warmest and sincerest thanks to all!!

What can be done to make Linux more competitive with Microsoft?
better software support from big name companies and bertter marketing.

Also, its partly the linux users faults. A lot of Linux die-hards give off the image that its the "geeks" operating system and anyone who doesn't use it is inferior. It needs to be touted as a USER-FRIENDLY alternative to microsoft.

I'm currently running windows xp, windows 98, and kubuntu on it. But kubuntu is too slow on my machine. Can anyone reccomend a different linux.

P.S. I want something that looks good also.

What is the best linux for my machine?
It could just be your desktop environment thats slowing you down. You may want to install XFCE and run that instead of KDE. As for other distro's these two are a sure thing:

DSL- Damn Small Linux! :) It's great and should be fast for you. http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

Here's a pic of the desktop from Wikipedia:

Or you could try out Knoppix if you have a cd-rom http://www.knoppix.org

Requirements to run Knoppix:

* Intel-compatible processor (i486 or later)

* 32 MB of RAM for text mode, at least 96 MB for graphics mode with KDE (at least 128 MB of RAM is recommended to use the various office products)

* Bootable CD-ROM drive, or a boot floppy and standard CD-ROM (IDE/ATAPI or SCSI)

Reply:With those kind of specs, I would suggest Xubuntu (like Kubuntu, it's based on Ubuntu, only this one is designed for lower spec machines): http://www.xubuntu.org/tour

Zenwalk, which is another user friendly distro that is pretty much designed for lower spec machines: http://www.zenwalk.org/

Both of them are very attractive distros, so attractive that they match other distros that are designed for higher spec machines well.

How do you install windows Xp and Linux on the same computer?

I was wandering if you can have Windows xp and Linux on the same computer? I know you have to partition your hard drive. But when you install it, how does your computer know if you want to boot into Windows or Linux?

How do you install windows Xp and Linux on the same computer?
You can dual boot with windows and linux.

Here's a quick howto:

Install windows first! - depending on your hard drive - 20 GB is a good size for the primary partition for windows .. if your drive is very large you can use more if you want..

leave part of the drive empty and unformatted.. at least 20 GB

for linux and any additional software

After you get window installed - and all your drivers etc., - shut down - this depends on if you have an install CD for linux -

Before shutting down windows insert the linux CD and restart the computer to Boot from the linux disk. Your computer has to be setup to boot from CD to do this..

Then you can direct the installation to your unformatted partition space.. Just follow the installation and configuration directions after that. Most flavors of Linux will install a boot loader program that offers you a choice of operating systems after the installation is complete..
Reply:It is called dual booting. You can goggle (internet search) for "dual boot XP linux" and see lot of article that describe how to do it.

There is video in youtube which will explain you the process:-

http://youtube.com/watch?v=sorO3xEfVuQ

One of it is given in below link (Window XP and Ubuntu Linux):- http://www.howtoforge.com/dual_boot_wind...
Reply:You can run it as a dual boot, or you can run Windows inside of Linux using VirtualBox, VmWare, etc. If you want to dual boot, you'll be given the option to resize your existing Windows partition during install (on most distros) and it will automatically setup a boot loader for you. When you boot up, it'll stop at a screen asking you which operating system to boot into.

The best distro for someone new to Linux is Ubuntu.

http://www.ubuntu.com

Simply download the LiveCD and burn it (as an image) to a CD. Boot to the CD and install Ubuntu. You can check out this guide here (with installation screenshots) for setting up the perfect Ubuntu desktop.

If you want, later you can read up on how to run Windows inside of Linux. Here's a short vid of me running Windows XP INSIDE of Ubuntu using VirtualBox.

Reply:Use Wubi! It's the best. It installs linux without you having to do any partioning. It's easy to do. All you do is download it from the link below. Then install it. Run it, and setup how you want the linux to be setup. Like user name and password. Then click next and it will download the iso files for linux do the partioning for you and everything. Then when you turn on your computer it will ask you if you want to boot into Windows XP or Wubi Ubuntu

Select that one. Then it will setup software and get drivers for your hardware from Windows XP. Then your good to go. You now have linux and windows xp dual boot. I love it. I have it on 2 of my computers and it works great!!

How to setup star topology network with windows XP and linux OS support?
Draw up a logical map of how you want everything situated, then draw up a physical map of how it will be wired up, then go forth and prosper!

Windows would be easier to configure, Linux is more fun if you are into geeky stuff. what i do is dualboot my server and configure it for the same services in windows and linux.

in windows it has a shared printer and a shared folder for network fileserving, in linux i use samba for print server and file server services, i can also remote-desktop into both and i can ssh and ftp the linux side from the internet (soon the windows side too). and that computer has 2 nics so soon it will be a linux-router in linux and a windows internet-connection sharing router in windows. it also has a tv card so it is my automated TV recording box too, it automatically records shows and i can stream them over my network or burn dvd's and cut out commercials.
Reply:A simple switch would suffice.

OS depends on what you are comfortable with. I'm a Windows guy and Windows 2003 is easy to use. XP will easily work with Windows 2003. You will probably need additional configuration for Linux to work with XP.

How do I load Linux (which one?) that I downloaded from the internet onto a new computer?

How do I load Linux (which one?) that I downloaded from the internet onto a new computer?
Just download a Knoppix or Kubuntu ISO image, burn it to a cd or dvd and boot from that cd or dvd.

Make sure you use the 'burn image' when you burn the cd or dvd. Copying the file to the cd does NOT work - you will not be able to boot from that cd.
Reply:Depends on which one you downloaded, but thats the usual method, yeah. Back in the day I downloaded Redhat and thats what I did. Use software like Nero or something to burn the iso to a disk, and then boot from the cd. I think Redhat charges money now, though, so you're probably using some other distro.

How can I configure windows xp pro and/or ubuntu linux to use two wireless nic's equally?

I have two wireless network cards. I can link to two separate routers attached to two separate cable modems. Why does both windows and linux insist that one be used and the other ignored? How can I reap the benefits of having twice the pipeline for data? Why can't I do true "multiplexed interfaces"? (is there any way to do it or trick the system to use both, instead of just one, on a per session basis?)

How can I configure windows xp pro and/or ubuntu linux to use two wireless nic's equally?
Well, when a remote site responds to a TCP/IP request, it responds to ONE ip not multiples.

For this to work, both signals would have to reach the remote site at the exact instant! (they wont!)

The remote site would have to respond at the exact instant. (It won't and can't.)

The signals would both have to reach back to you at the exact instant. (They won't and can't)

TCP/IP connections use IP addresses to respond to and two addresses get two responses not ONE. In your depiction you will be sending from TWO public IP's (one for each modem) not one! So the OS's only use ONE WAN connection at a time else you make for a large traffic jam!

You can "load balance" (use one when the other is busy) but you can't combine unless you get a bonded set of lines from your ISP (which basically is ONE LINE!)

Just the way TCP/IP works! If you need more pipe, get a bigger one don't try using two.

How do i remove linux from my laptop and install Win XP?

I've tried to install Win XP by using it's bootable CD, but that doesn't work. What else can be done to completely remove Linux from my Laptop, which is installed on the whole Hard drive.

How do i remove linux from my laptop and install Win XP?
Format your hard drive and then try to install.
Reply:Chances are you still have LILO boot loader on there, correct?

If so, you need to low level format the drive.

I recommend an app called killdisk. The free version is all you need. 1 pass will wipe out everything on the drive. If you don't have a floppy drive, use the bootable iso and burn it to CD.

After the killdisk process is finished you have a clean drive and can now install XP from scratch.
Reply:Don't worry, this is familiar ground with me. Download SystemRescueCD (www.sysresccd.org) and then burn it to CD using UltraISO (link in sources). Run FDisk and reformat the partition. Insert your XP cd and run the installer. Good luck!
Reply:Why would you want to remove Linux? Windows XP SUCKS. You should get a Mac, but anything is better than Windows...
Reply:Just blast the partition using an Fdisk utility and personally I also zap the boot sector then after rebooting, install WinXP in the cleaned out partition.....best Fdisk utility to use is the one included in most Linux CD's.....that way you can blast the main as well as the swap partition and join them into one large partition

I suspect getting a wireless connection would will be very difficult if you in fact have no wireless card. That bit of info might be something you need to resolve.

What is the easiest Linux or Uix certification to pursue?

I work in IT field. Will Linux+ from Comptia from be the easiest and take least time to prepare and study?

What is the easiest Linux or Uix certification to pursue?
Yes it is the easiest, and be a foundation for Linux knowledge - however like the other Comptia certifications they are only a foundation and must be built upon to get solid knowledge in the area. Walking into an interview and saying you are Linux+/Network+/A+ will only impress the HR Department but won't get you much with the IT department unless you're interviewing for the most entry level position they offer.

What version of Linux should I use, and where can I get it?

Reply:For windows-feel but still very much Linux, Kubuntu is hard to beat. It's certainly got the largest 'friendly' support network. There are forums for all the distros, but Ubuntu being the most popular means it's got the busier forums. And being based on a long standing distro (Debian) means that there's plenty of nearly-the-same advice around also.

The project is Ubuntu, and it's available in a few guises - Ubuntu uses the Gnome window manager, Kubuntu uses KDE and Xubuntu uses XFCE.

Of those, KDE is the most windows-like, and XFCE is the most lightweight.

If you're doing this to mess around with Linux, i'd go with XFCE. It's no harder than KDE, but it's more different from windows than KDE. Being lightweight is a bonus, too.

Damn small is a nice lightweight distro, but it's not designed for a hard drive install, which shows - someone new to linux may well feel a bit lost in the install process, and in general use.

If you've got the time, and are willing to experiment, try them all. And the BSDs, too (though they're a little trickier to install, and there's less documentation, but it's generally of a higher quality). Whatever you do now, if you end up liking Linux and switching to it, you'll go through a phase of trying out all that you can get your hands on before settling on one that 'feels right'. We've all either been there or are still doing it - you don't always come out the other side...
Reply:These linux distros will run on old hardware:

Damn Small Linux: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org

Deli-Linux: http://delili.lens.hl-users.com

Puppy Linux: http://www.puppylinux.org

Xubuntu: http://www.xubuntu.org

As far as wanting to run firefox/openoffice I think they would both run but would be very slow, consider something like Dillo as the browser and Siag for Office suite.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

No you generally cant run windows programs on it. The things you run are 'alternative' Linux programs which imitate the features of windows software. IE You would use openoffice instead of msoffice (similar suite, less features), GAIM instead of Yahoo Messenger or MSN, etc etc.

I can download the files from the windows pc then take them on my memory stick to the Ubuntu pc but I don't know what to do next???? this is where you come in.

Is it possible to install programs on a (ubuntu) linux which isnt conected to the internet?
You need the source code and you can install the applications with no need for internet connectivity. You might need some dependency packages that need to be installed to have the software work on ur pc..

Try looking for an application that displays the dependencies so you can check if you got them or not..

To install the applications just use a command like:

make

make install

or something like that, i can't remember correctly :)

If it is a .deb file, then you just double click and it installs itself..

Check out the link i provided, it should give you a clearer look..

Hope this helps %26amp; good luck,

I installed ubuntu linux on my pc, but sound wont work. How do i fix it?

Its the latest Ubuntu linux.

When i click on the volume control icon, it says that volume control GStreamer plugins not found. It has also said that I dont have a sound card, which i do.

I installed ubuntu linux on my pc, but sound wont work. How do i fix it?
What you need to do is get acquainted with the Ubuntu help forums. There are lots of postings there from people who have had different problems. Sometimes sound, sometimes other things. Those forums will tell you what "GStreamer plugins not found means", and how to fix it.

Does the sound work if you boot from a liveCD? If so then it might be quicker/less painful to reinstall - that is not a major investment following a so-so install experience.

You don't say what your soundcard is, you don't say what your computer is. Go to the Ubuntu forums - they give you hardware specific fixit information.

How do I access my hard drive from a LiveCD of Feather Linux?

I am trying to access a hard drive which will not boot with Windows XP. I've given up on loading it normally, so instead I'm trying a LiveCD of Feather Linux. Could someone give me step-by-step directions as to how to access the drive?

I don't normally use Linux, so assume I don't know how to do anything besides point and click.

How do I access my hard drive from a LiveCD of Feather Linux?
If you just want to access your files and nothing else:

1) First you need to be the superuser. Go to a terminal and type "su - ". That will make you root.

2) Type "fdisk -l" (that's a lowercase L, not an uppercase i) to see your partitions. You may only have one, but if there are multiple partitions you will need to determine which one is your Windows partition (the one with an * is your boot partition).

3) Then you need to make a directory to mount your Windows partition in... type "mkdir windows".

4) Then you need to actually mount the drive. Type "mount /dev/sda1 windows", where sda1 is the name of the drive you found in step 1 that contains your Windows partition. Your Windows files should now be in windows.

You will have read-only permissions to the Windows partition. You can type "man mount" to show a full description of the mount command and its options.

Feel free to contact me if you need help.

Where can I find some free programs for Linux?

I just started experimenting with Linux, and I like the way it works, I'd like to find some open source programs to use with it, time wasters are especially nice. I'd also like to find some open source security and anti virus software.

Where can I find some free programs for Linux?
As Linux has next to no market share, you need no AntiVirus (in general) because no one writes viruses for Linux. The same goes for Macs. Also, Linux appears to be based in stronger UNIX code, making it less vulnerable to viruses.

You can try http://sourceforge.net, which is SourceForge (as you might guess from the URL), a source for open-source software (pun intended). There are quite a few programs there for Linux, just search for what you like.

Good luck, and have fun with Linux!
Reply:sourceforge.net
Reply:Most distros have a repository to download software from. All you have to do is fire up your package manager and search for the program you want.
Reply:it depends on your linux distribution. go check distro's website and find out the package manager software for that distro. U can also find new programs and most popular linux opensource programs in http://freshmeat.net

Reply:First, is the executable you're trying to run a Windows executable? If so it's not going to work. If it's a Linux executable file you should be able to run it by opening a shell, navigating to the executable's directory and running "./[executable name]". If that doesn't work you may want to check to see if the executable is indeed executable. Type ls -l on the command line and see if permissions on the file are something like r-x. If not you need to make the file executable by running chmod 544 [executable name]. I hope this helps.
Reply:The software is called wine.

sudo apt-get install wine

To run the exe

navigate to the directory of the file in the terminal:

cd /home/USERNAME/Desktop

Then type:

wine PROGRAM.exe

I was assuming you were talking about runign windows executables, if you weren't

just navigate to the directory of the file through the terminal and type:

./PROGRAM

What are server load averages messaged in on linux servers?

If you get server loads in linux they are decimal numbers ... 0.10, 0.80 etc ... what measurement is this? Is this percentage? 100 being top ?

What are server load averages messaged in on linux servers?
System load averages is the average number of processes that are either in a runnable or uninterruptable state. A process in a runnable state is either using the CPU or waiting to use the CPU.

My system has 1 CPU so 1.00 means the CPU is busy 100% of the time. That actually isnt all that bothersome. But a 2.00 means that there is a line wating to use the CPU (I can feel some lag). And a 6.00 means that something better finish what its doing to hog the system because people will complain soon

Is it possible to use WLAN on the PS3 (Playstation 3) on a Yellowdog Linux installation?
Hi,

From terrasofts homepage about wireless device on PS3:

How to you get the internet on Ubuntu Linux?

I can't access the internet on ubuntu from my Computer. When I boot into Linux, I will try to connect to my wireless router. I enter all of the data (WEP key and the name of the Network) but it always keeps asking for the same information ALL THE TIME. No matter how many times I enter this information, it doesn't connect. So, does it need a Ethernet cable to plug into the router, or can it access my wireless card integrated in my PC.

How to you get the internet on Ubuntu Linux?
Do you have the correct drivers for your wireless access card installed ? In my experience, I have had to install the windows drivers using a NDIS wrapper in order to connect.

How many Linux Distros have you got installed on one Hard Drive?

I've got three.

Ubuntu 7.04

Ubuntu 7.10

Linux Mint 4.0

How many Linux Distros have you got installed on one Hard Drive?
Debian GNU/Linux unstable branch

FreeBSD 6.2

Debin GNU/Hurd K14

But I'm only familiar with Linux. The other two, I only installed recently. And what? K14 is now oldish. I'm still taking baby steps in learning to use it. Soon gotta upgrade to its latest release.

As for FreeBSD, I use it as a backup system. I know for sure that I'll mess up the other two so badly one day. So I put this FreeBSD as a backup system just to keep the PC running in that time. But not conversant with this as well. Many commands seem familiar, so looks a bit easier than GNU/Hurd.
Reply:That depends if I'm allowed to include my virtual machines ;-) One physical and 6 virtual for me.
Reply:only one at a time for me I go low tech when I want to dostro hop I buy cheap HDs off ebay and put differant distros on till I am content I am not much of a computer geek I just fumble around I have never been able to get anything to work right from the command line not on any distro never got yum to work never got rpm to work forget portage. so basicly I am just a bone head but I am smart enough to know that ubuntu based distros like linux mint solve all my problems I am free of viruses and lovin life
Reply:I had a triple boot system 10 days ago (xp/kubuntu/edubuntu)but something got screwed up.Now I have dual boot(xp/edubuntu)

Correct me If i m wrong but I think there's a problem in running KDE and gnome as a dual boot.If I have gnome already installed and then I run kde as live cd then both the GUIs get screwed and the edubuntu partition starts in command line mode,,saying that there's some prob with the GUI.

Thats why I buried my greed to have two and settled down with one linux partition.
Reply:I plan on puting Mandrake and Ubantu on my computer next week. My dad wouldn't let me re-fomat until I got a second computer, which arrived yesterday. Hehe, me love my new computer *hugs her laptop* but my old one will not be neglected.
Reply:I only have one. I hardly ever dual-boot linux distros. When I'm in the mood to try out a bunch I usually just completely format and install

How can I completely remove windows and install linux on my HP laptop pavillion 6000?

Linux Beryl but what's the most fun? Anyway give me steps and details please?

How can I completely remove windows and install linux on my HP laptop pavillion 6000?
When you're going through the installation process for Linux, it'll most likely give you the option of formatting the drive you're installing Linux to (wiping Windows out in the process — hope you're going to back up anything important first) or merely dividing the drive into smaller partitions. Aside from backups, there isn't really anything you need to do in Windows to "prepare" it.
Reply:Fdisk it. But you are far better of to partition the drive to run both. It basically makes your pc think it has two hard drives. Windows is still useful for some things so it is good to keep it around. The easiest way is to by a removable hard drive. $80 will get you a 100+ GB drive and Linux can run off that.

How do you install softwares downloaded from other sites to Linux (Ubuntu)?

Pls tell me in detail, step by step, as I have downloaded .tar %26amp; .tar.gz files on my ubuntu linux desktop. I am new to linux and i only know that I have to open terminal and type the codes. Tell me how to open, how to install and where to install.

How do you install softwares downloaded from other sites to Linux (Ubuntu)?
save yourself a lot of hassles and use the package manager. Linux doesn't install software in the same way as windows. With windows, you just download the file and its all there. Run the setup executable and it installs. easy. With linux, there's the software (tar.gz etc) that you've downloaded and then there may be up to 5, 10, + packages that need to be installed so that the file can run. These include libraries, programming languages, etc. You also have to make sure you obtain the correct version of each dependency. It can be a real pain in the butt.

The package manager makes all the calculations for you. You just tell it what you want to install and it gets all the dependencies and sets them all up for you. Ubuntu has a great range of packages already available. Only go the downloading and installing non .deb files if you really have no alternative or if you can see that the dependencies required are either already installed or easy to obtain.
Reply:You shouldn't need to...but you can if you want. First you have to type in:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

To get the programs you need on your system. After that, you follow this pattern in the terminal:

tar -xvf %26lt;filename%26gt;.tar.gz

cd %26lt;filename%26gt;

./configure

make

sudo make install

But that's doing it from scratch. There may be (should be) a .deb package for the software you want to install. In that case, it's just a matter of double-clicking on the .deb file and letting the GUI install it for you.

Either that, or it might already be in the Ubuntu repositories. Go to System %26gt; Administration %26gt; Synaptic Package Manager. Then, click search and type your program name in. That's how you would do it the easy way. If you don't find it, you can try enabling the Universe and Multiverse repositories in the Package Manager.

I want to add Linux to my computer but I don't want to eliminate Windows XP. How can I do this?

I looked at Xandros but it looks like it combines with XP somehow. What I want is a dual boot set up with ability to choose the OS at startup. Could Linux work off an external drive thereby keeping it off the PC running XP and eliminate the need to create another partition for Linux? TKS

I want to add Linux to my computer but I don't want to eliminate Windows XP. How can I do this?
Yes, you would need to create a new partition. Yes, you need a Dual Boot manager. NO, Linux probably won't be able to see the Windows XP NTFS partition.

Basically, what you are trying to do is silly. If you want to learn Linux, I recommend that you seek an old worn-out Pentium II class or better computer, and install Linux on that.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
Reply:You can run a LIVE CD Knoppix that you can download

from their website. Download the ISO and then burn it into

a CD or DVD. After you are done , stick the CD into the

drive and reboot your PC , Knoppix(linux) will load and you can learn linux without the troubles to installing it. You can

also partition your drive using the XP manager and risizing your drive. That is more complex . After your hdd has been

partition install linux on the partition. When you come to the booter offered by linux choose GRUB which allow you to dual boot and giving you a choice between linux or XP. Don't select LILO because it won't give you that dual boot option.

Check Kanoppix linux LIVE CD which can even be better than Knoppix. Try both.

Good luck
Reply:You can download and run Ubuntu/Linux from CD without using your harddrive.

Just download it and burn it to a CD.

Then reboot your computer with the CD in the drive.
Reply:I'm not a dual booter....but.... I believe you really need to create a partition to hold Linux. I believe there is a section in bios for dual boot - or it is an option when you're creating another partition (to make it bootable). Then when your computer boots, you get a choice to click which OS you want to boot.
Reply:assume you've have 40 /80 GB hdd

create 2/3 Dos partition leave the remainining space unpartitioned . so that it can be used as a room for linux ,as linux can only work with NON-DOS partition .

thts whn u have unpartitioned space ,u can easily install linux ...

also use VM ware ,so that u can switch back between linux %26amp; windows xp without restarting the system ..

You can alwasy have dual between linux and any of the microsoft OS.

Then I tried Dynebolic Linux live, it worked faster than

Windows XP. Internet access was very good. You can try:

Reply:---I have tried installing Linux on an external Hard Drive before, it didn't work. The problem was that my computer wouldn't boot from USB devices. Here is what I ended up doing:

-Got GParted, and created a 5 GB partition for linux, and left a 95GB partition for Windows. Then I transformed half of the external Hard Drive to FAT32, and left the rest as NFTS. That way, everything I do in Linux is stored into the FAT32 portion of the external Hard Drive, and can easily be read from Windows if I need to.

What is the best Linux free or commercial that's easy to use and can read and write to NTFS partitions well?

I just want to install Linux for my sister, but she is not really in-depth computer literate, but she wants to try something new. I know linux well enough, but I have not tried every distribution. Your comments on the different distributions would be helpful.

What is the best Linux free or commercial that's easy to use and can read and write to NTFS partitions well?
Hummm... Reading a NTFS filsystem is fairly easy. I've done that with RedHat and Fedora, just mounting the Windows partition as a readonly filesystem. But WRITING to the partition was not supported (at least a year ago, when I did that).
Reply:Any distro will work just fine.

Knoppix works right off the CD.

KUbuntu is considered by many to be one of the most user friendly.

What is the best version of Linux in your opinion and why?

im sick of windows vista ultimate i know security wise and speed wise the Linux operating system is the better choice but there are so many choices on which Linux OS you could have as your main OS i wanns know everyones opinion on what they think i should get and some good reasons to back up why i should get that version of linux

What is the best version of Linux in your opinion and why?
I use ubuntu and I don't bother with Windows at all anymore. I dual-booted for maybe 6 months and by then I was far enough up the learning curve that anything I wanted to do, I could do in linux.

There are basically two good user-friendly linuxes: Debian-based, and Red Hat-based. Both make it easy to install stuff by using a GUI-based package system. Lots of other distros use one or the other system, though in fact it is easy to use both since the "alien" program converts packages between the two types.

Ubuntu uses the Debian (.deb) system. Fedora uses the Red Hat (.rpm) system. And no matter which one you use, you will use apt-get from terminal quite a bit, too.

I like Ubuntu because it has the most user-to-user support. It has an international, worldwide theme, and a lot of people using it. Linux progresses by the actions of trailblazers, intrepid hackers who figure out how to to something then tell everyone else how to follow. Ubuntu's forums are a rich source of information on how to do practically anything that has been done in linux. Whatever you want to do, it is likely that someone has done it before in ubuntu, and posted exactly how in the forums.

For this same reason, ubuntu is a very good choice for someone new to linux. There are plenty of places where you can ask noob questions and not get laughed at. You'll have a functional desktop, menu and window environment right after install, and most things will be easy to do right off the bat.

%26gt;edit%26lt; Gentoo is a mighty fast linux to install on a ps3, that's for sure. Installing ubuntu on a ps3 used to involve installing Gentoo first, then downloading ubuntu ppc.

It's extremely configurable, but since that involves having to compile everything you install, it's not good for a first distro
Reply:You start with a simple installing version - Ubuntu, or one of the other in the top 4 or 5 at www.distrowatch.com. You tinker with that for a while, but ONLY as a dual-boot system. Then you can decide if you like Linux, and if you want to keep windoze. Then, after you have crossed that decision path at some point you decide if you want to tinker with other distros, and move from there to the next decision path - which depends on what you want to do as you know more about Linux - not as people tell you!
Reply:My opinion is Gentoo Linux is the best because you can customize it so much to your computer and it is the fastest distribution out there. It has almost every windows manager all you have to do is set it up.

For beginners I would use ubuntu but I am not an ubuntu fan. Debian is also very good too but some parts of it take some in depth know how.
Reply:All the "different" Linux choices you speak of are really all based on the same core. The differences between them comes down to the "look and feel" of the OS. The other main difference falls with package management, some use source based compiles, others use Debian packages and apt-get (my personal favourite), some use RPMS (Fedora), and so on. If you are really new to the Linux world, and not incredibly familiar with how things work I'd suggest Ubuntu as a good starter. It's a very user-friendly distribution of Linux with a great community that's always willing to help with any questions. Keep in mind, while Linux may be more secure and.. arguably faster, the application support is nothing near Windows. You may hear people always preach about how there are tons of great open-source alternatives to a lot of main Windows programs, but when it comes down to it Windows still wins on the application diversity and availability side. While most of the open source alternatives work fairly well, you may find yourself making a dual-boot with Windows (I do this myself) since there are just some applications that I need Windows to run.
Reply:The latest Ubuntu. It has the biggest following and therefore most support, the software installation package is easy and fast, and the whole interface is very friendly to new linux users.

OpenSuse and Fedora are also extremely useful to new linux users. No matter which Distribution you choose, you are going to have to be very friendly with google.

How does linux differ from windows and mac?

I just got my linux OS to work and was just wondering how the files are different. I have a lot of experience with both mac and windows but none with linux. If I bought windows software will it install on a linux OS? What about mac software? Just kind of wondering what will and wont work with linux.

Thanks in advance

How does linux differ from windows and mac?
the files aren't really different.. it's based on unix.. so yer its bound to be good ;-)

and remember OS-x is based on BSD

as for installing linux.. it has become a lot easier than when i started, when it used to be on 80 floppy discs.. there is LOADS of help regarding it on the web, even for new people.

The main thing about Linux i would say is stick to major brands of hardware, as they are supported and check the hardware compatibility list to make sure.

as for running windows software, there is a thing called WINE..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_v...

might be an interesting read..

as for running OS-x software etc on a NIX machine.hmm never tried..

thing is theres a wealth of decent free software for linux/kde etc which are pretty good.

main reason i keep windows is that the programs I use for music are windows/os-x only..
Reply:Hmm well, if you're truly talking about Linux, you could either be using the old-fashioned command line execution or these days you could be using a graphical desktop (like Windows or Mac).

From what I understand, Linux requires that all software is Linux-compatible, meaning most software you had that worked with Windows and Mac respectively won't work on Linux.
Reply:linux is crap!

windows is the best

I want to install linux on another hard drive, how do I start?

Where do I get linux? How do I install it on another hard drive once I have it? I don't want to lose my windows data, but I would like to try Linux.

I want to install linux on another hard drive, how do I start?
You can start here to choose a distro : www.distrowatch.com

I personally recommend Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com), it is very user friendly and its user community forums are the Best and most active I have found bar none for answers and guides. I cannot stresss enough how great their forums and wiki are. If you need to know how to do it, the answer is probably there.

It should prompt you to install the grub boot loader (just be sure you read the prompts) which will allow you to choose which OS to boot into.

The current distro of ubuntu is 6.06,Dapper Drake, its comes as an installable live-cd. in other words, you can run it off the cd, or you can click the install icon on the desktop and follow the directions from there =) ..worth noting, running off of live cd is MUCH slower than installed, so don't judge it by it's speed in that setting. installed ubuntu with the GNOME desktop environment is very zippy! (but lets not start the GNOME vs KDE flame wars, just making an observation)

if you are patient you can sign up to have them ship you one, free of charge (they even pay postage), but its just a one-cd download, so not to big a deal (as opposed to some of the 3-6 cd monsters that are common these days)

good luck!
Reply:first you must download CD or DVD images version of linux , there are many distributions.. then you must burn the disk

red had fedora core

debian

mandrake etc..

If your computer is a DELL use a Suse Linux

madame any version of linux is superior than windows..
